Default Navigation Voice Command - Does Your's Work?

Hi All. I am in Southern California. I have a 2017 QX30 and have been pleased for most of 2 years so far, however my only disappointment with the vehicle that continues to frustrate me is the lack of intelligence in the Navigation and Voice Command system. No matter how clearly and slowly I speak, the system doesn't seem to "hear me" efficiently, will respond with a list of destinations unrelated to my request, and if I test the system by saying something typical like "McDonald's", it will give me a list starting with a McDonald's 450 miles away proving it doesn't know where I am and create a list closest to furthest. In addition to it being inefficient, it speaks so slowly I want to speed it up but don't know where that setting it. I was unable to test the Navigation system when I test drove it back then. If I knew it was just for looks and I would be using my phone for GPS, then I would not have paid the extra for it. Does anyone else have this issue with their nav system, or know if there is a system update that has been created and how to acquire it? The dealership has no clue!

Is just my Nav system broken or do others have a similar experience?

I never use car voice recognition systems for POI names. I've found that to be an exercise in futility with pretty much EVERY built-in navigation system.

The voice recognition does a good job with addresses, however. I'll usually find the address in Apple Maps and then use the voice recognition to enter the address into the Infiniti navigation system.

The POI name recognition can be hit or miss. I also have a 2017 and I've run into the following situations:

- If I say "Walmart," it brings up several varieties (e.g., Wal-Mart, Walmart Superstore). If I type in W-a-l-m-a-r-t, it often misses the one I want because of a hyphen or apostrophe in the name.
- It has a tough time with local restaurants, either because the POI isn't in the database or my mid-atlantic accent doesn't match the pronunciation it's expecting.
- If you know you are ready to say something, press the voice command button again. Don't wait for the voice command to finish saying the sentence.
- I've never had the system point me to a McDonald's 10 miles away, let alone 450. Maybe do a manual typed-in search to change the city.

Totally Agree. The Nav system on my QX30 is subpar. Compared to other new vehicles I’ve driven (including non-luxury models) it just doesn’t compete. Small screen, jerky, non-smooth scrolling, poor text/graphics on maps, voice recognition...seems outdated. I’m really surprised Infiniti would put such a crappy nav package in a “luxury” crossover.
Maybe they knew they’d be dumping it in 2 short years!

Have you driven any other Infiniti models? The nav is basically the same in all models.

No, haven’t driven other Infiniti models. But my wife’s new Hyundai Santa Fe, daughter’s new Honda Pilot and friend’s new Honda CRV all have better navigation.

Yes, the Garnin system that Honda uses is better.

Funny thing is Acura still uses the worst system in the MDX, however.
